KATE SABLE
Kate Sable (b. 1984) is an abstract painter who lives and works outside Washington, D.C., in Reston, VA. Growing up in a small town on the New River, she spent a lot of her childhood outside, and the curves, layers and shifting light of that place still find their way into her work. Her oil paintings evolve through constant reworking: forms are laid down, questioned, buried and scraped back until they start to nest and cradle one another, and hard-edged geometry loosens into something less predictable. The work is abstract and deeply personal, and it reveals more the longer you look, with new shapes and patterns surfacing over time.
Sable holds an MFA in Painting from American University (2009) and a BFA from Virginia Tech (2005). Recent solo exhibitions include Morning Letters at Jennifer Terzian Gallery (Litchfield, CT), New River (Washington, D.C.), The Line as Folding at Virginia Tech's Armory Gallery (Blacksburg, VA) and Could I Have Been Just Anyone (Kensington, MD). Recent group exhibitions include Full Saturation, presented by Transformer at The LINE DC (Washington, D.C.), as well as shows with Heaven Gallery (Chicago, IL), Left Field Gallery (Los Osos, CA), Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA), River House Arts (Toledo, OH), Goucher College (Baltimore, MD), The Silva Gallery (Washington, D.C.), Janice Charach Gallery (West Bloomfield, MI), Circle Contemporary (Chicago, IL) and Art Enables (Washington, D.C.).
Her work has been featured in multiple editions of Art Maze Mag and reviewed in The Washington Post, Washington City Paper and Two Coats of Paint. She has been interviewed by The American Scholar and Inertia Studio Visits, and on the podcasts I Like Your Work and Beware the Artist.
