Lolo Gem employs symbolism and spliced narratives to explore human vulnerability, engaging with the fragmented and hidden aspects of the self—those shaped by fear, anxiety, grief, and the desire for connection. Gem creates playfully absurd paintings, drawings, and ceramic sculptures populated by evocative markers of safety and comfort. Enticing saturated colors, lively elastic forms, and nostalgic cartoon iconography engulf the viewer while vibrating with an underlying tension that elusively disguises the emotional depth the work navigates.

Gem often begins with a collage process using imagery culled from vintage comic books and animation, purposefully omitting and recontextualizing key aspects of the original narratives. Informed by personal experience, the principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, and Jungian psychology, the work explores the tension between what is revealed and what remains obscured. The resulting pieces evoke comforting familiarity and allure alongside an undercurrent of apprehension, uneasiness, and tension.
