MORE ABOUT ARTIST

MISHEL VALENTON

Mishel Valenton is a Filipino-American, immigrant artist currently living in the Richmond, VA area. She works in oil paints, gouache, and digital media, focusing on color-centric, expressive figuration that reflects personal narratives. She calls her works “past, present, and future projections of self.’’ Born in Manila in 1982, Valenton migrated to the U.S. in 2004 and now lives in Richmond, Virginia. The symbolism and language in her work reflects her Filipino upbringing and American immigrant existence, referencing Filipino idiosyncrasies and locales to build a personal connection to her own history while also capturing everyday human experiences. The figures she creates represent feelings and states of mind, from disappointment and dreaming to resting within the context of a digitally dependent world. Valenton has shown her work in group exhibitions across the U.S. and, including, a solo exhibition in Sense Gallery in Washington, D.C, and “Water Under Burning Brides”, at ADA Gallery, Richmond, VA in 2025.
